Burnt End
Tim and Kay Taylor, long standing members of Newcastle Bowling Club, bid the club a fond farewell last Friday night by generously sponsoring prizes for a fun evening of bowls, followed by snacks.
After nearly 20 years at the club, both Tim and Kay expressed their appreciation to all the members for the camaraderie and friendship they had encountered over the years.
The competition was played with participants drawing random tabs regarding their opponents, and where the closest shot did not count, but only second shots contributed to the final result.
The team of Aspen Shaw, Gert Roos, Douglas Steele and Lindsay McArthur were crowned victors walking away with the main prize. Andy Robinson, Ron Howe, Tony Reis and Bert Rodgers followed in second place, with Adriaan van de Merwe, Billy Nick, Anil Durgadin and Marie Botha in third place.
The Northern zone Men’s Singles Championships held at Newcastle Bowling Club recently attracted 36 entries who were divided into 12 sections.
Section winners qualifying for the knock-out stages were: Martin le Roux (Mahawane CC), Brandon van Vreden and Bertus van Vreden (both Piet Retief), Douglas Steele, Billy Nicholas, Sid Price, Stephen Shaw, Adrian van der Merwe, Anil Durgadin, Ron Howe (all Newcastle) and Phillip Scheepers (Vryheid) and Dries Fouche (Piet Retief).
In the last 16 games, Bertus beat his son, Brandon. Douglas edged out Billy and Anil beat Adrian with Dries beat Phillip in the final match.
In the last eight games Bertus beat Marius, with Sid snuck in against Douglas, while Stephen got the upper hand on Anil and Ron being triumphant over Dries.
Playing in the semi finals Sid beat Bertus and Ron pipped Stephen to set up an interesting final against two accomplished singles players.
