A rose for Martie on her 98th birthday

Eldest resident at La Gratitude, Martie Vermooten, celebrated her 98th birthday on Monday.

Bouquets of sunshine yellow roses brightened Martie Vermooten’s dresser on her 98th birthday, last Monday.

Doting nurse, Marlize Wilson, says they were Mrs Vermooten’s favourite flowers back when she dabbled in flower arranging and baking.

While it was uncertain if Mrs Vermooten was aware of the festivity around her or not, the precious memories preserved in the many photographs around her portrayed a life well spent.

Mrs Vermooten has resided at La Gratitude for 19 years and has only recently been moved to the wing designated for the very frail. Her daughter, Annetjie Hey, treated residents of La Gratitude to fruit and ice cream in celebration of her birthday.
