A look at a week in the life of law enforcement in town

The simple truth is that the K-9 Unit is short of dogs and as an elite crime-fighting tool is being seriously hampered by red tape and a don't care attitude

Public Safety is very short staffed… With ¾ of the staff suspended pending the outcome of corruption charges, they have their hands full.

The K-9 Unit has its own problems – plenty of ‘man’ power, but very few dogs to go around. Five dogs – two are specialist dogs (explosives and drugs) and the other three are supposed to be patrol dogs.

Yet when last did you see a Dog Unit officer actually patrolling with a dog? The simple truth is that the K-9 Unit is short of dogs and as an elite crime-fighting tool is being seriously hampered by red tape and a don’t care attitude.

Policemen come and go, and in this case, well-known top cop Speedy Shrinath has hung up his pistol for semi-retirement. He will be missed.
