2013 was an eventful year, and as each year passes, we’re fond of saying that it went by too quickly.
For many, a new year is a time to start afresh and assess our lives – to make changes and resolve to be better.
I gave up making resolutions a long time ago, but the practice is still popular (queue “I’m starting at the gym” jokes!)
A general consensus among family, friends and colleagues have revealed the top 10 most popular resolutions:
- Stop smoking
- Lose weight
- Eat healthier
- Exercise more
- Spend more time with family
- Aim higher at work
- Save money towards an education/house/car
- Drink less/give up alcohol completely
- Read more, and
- Give up junk food.
A common theme emerges – the need to save money and try to get fit and healthy. Come January, common jokes persist that gym owners rake in the cash from the ‘idealistic’ public, intent on making good on their resolutions.
I am not a cynic. However, I do believe that even the best of intentions can be waylaid by life – we’re too busy, there’s not enough time, too tired… the list is endless.
I always advocate the importance of maintaining balance in life – this is a subconscious ‘resolution’ I make to myself each year. I will be the first to admit this does not always work out! I read too much, work too late and procrastinate until the stress builds. Then, I panic!
This year, there are many changes on the cards, both at work and in my personal life.
However, while I will be at the front of the queue to say ‘don’t make promises to yourself that you can’t keep’, I still think it’s wise to work towards goals.
Don’t let the pressure knock you down, and commit yourself to being a better person, if that’s what you aim to be.
I wish all of you an amazing 2014, and for those of you who are still going strong with your resolutions – good luck!
