The woman who was killed by a train  yesterday near TFS Wholesalers has been named by police as 22-year-old Vashnee Beharie.

A police inquest will be held to determine the cause of death.

Eye witnesses at the scene say she was hit by a train shortly after it went through the Ladysmith Train Station and as it passed behind TFS.

The train was not traveling at high speed and as the train approached the women who was on the tracks the train horn blew repeatedly.

A fully loaded freight train even travelling at slow speed still requires over a 100 metres to stop…

Nearby workers had noticed the woman walk through the TFS yard and onto the tracks. They were shocked when she made no attempt to get out of the way of the train.

When paramedics arrived at the scene they realised the woman who had been dragged beneath the train for over a 100 metres was still alive.

Sharaj Ambulance Rescue personnel dived under the train without hesitation and worked to free the trapped woman. Within 15 minutes they had got her out from under the train and rushed her to the Ladysmith Provincial Hospital.

She died of her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
