62-year old man arrested for illegal firearm

Just before mid-night police stormed a house in the KwaLatha area, Msinga. Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police embarked on an intelligence driven operation.

The officers will be continuing with their operations to eradicate the proliferation of illegal firearms in the province. A 62-year-old male was arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

Officers conducted a search and found him in possession of an AK 47 rifle with six live rounds of ammunition.

The 62-year old man was charged and will be appearing in Msinga Magistrates’ Court today.

Police then proceeded to another homestead in the area where there were no occupants but a .303 rifle and an empty pistol magazine was recovered.

KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded POP members on the recovery of firearms and the arrest.

“These operations will continue to make sure that we eradicate illegal firearms in our province. The seized firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to ascertain if they were used in the commission of crime. We hope that the seizure of these firearms will assist us to solve our pending cases,” she said.
