Area Guide: Vryheid

With historical and natural landmarks in and around it, as well as a small collection of charming restaurants, Vryheid is truly a Natal gem.

Area Guide: Vryheid

A stay in Vryheid feels like an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. That’s probably why it’s so appropriate that the small town’s name means ‘freedom’. Known mainly for its coal mining and cattle farming, Vryheid is also a notable starting point for an excursion into either nature or history.

Vryheid is 70 kms away from the historic town of Dundee. It boasts its own historical importance of course, being central to KwaZulu-Natal’s Battlefields Route (it’s an hour’s drive away from the site of the Battle of Blood River). The town’s surrounds are also populated by natural landmarks, such as the Hluhluwe, Ithala and Mkuze Game Reserves, all of which are ideal places to go on a game drive; and several rivers, including the Mkuze, Pongola and Black and White Umfolozi.

You don’t have to venture too far, however, to enjoy what Vryheid has to offer. The closest opportunity for an outdoor adventure while staying here is the Vryheid Mountain Nature Reserve, home to a variety of game and birdlife and great for hiking enthusiasts.

History is also right on your doorstep, in the form of several architectural highlights.  These include the house of Lucas Meyer, president of the short-lived Nieuwe Republiek (which existed from 1884 to 1888), of which Vryheid was the capital. Other notable places in town are the Old Raadsaal (Council Chamber) and Fort, and the beautiful Dutch Reformed Church, a local heritage site.

If, after your adventures, you’re in need of refreshment, there is a small but varied selection of eateries in town, such as Dee’s Restaurant and Bar, Klets Café and Deli, Francocel Coffee Shop and Bakery, and Seasons Gifts & Coffee Shop. Vryheid is also home to The Water Wheel, a serene wedding and conference venue boasting gorgeous views.
