Ladysmith: A nature lover’s dream location

Ladysmith is not just a town known for its proximity to the Drakensberg mountains, but is also surrounded by a number of nature reserves that offer everything for hikes and picnics, to canoeing.

Whether you’ve lived in Ladysmith for quite some time or you’re planning on moving to the area soon, it sure doesn’t disappoint when it comes to offering up a true South African outdoor experience. Situated on the banks of the Klip River, Ladysmith is based at the bottom of the majestic Drakensberg Mountains, the highest mountain range in South Africa. If you’re a nature lover, here are a few spots to take advantage of.

Chelmsford Nature Reserve

A mere 70 kilometres from Ladysmith, the Chelmsford Nature Reserve is located around the Ntshingwayo Dam, home to 217 species of birds including flamingo, fish eagles and yellow-billed duck. Visitors will also have the chance to spot springbok, red hartebeest and blesbok while enjoying the day out windsurfing, canoeing or jet skiing.

Ntendeka Wilderness Area

A 5250 hectare piece of land, the small Ntendeka Wilderness Area consists of grassland, forests, waterfalls and rivers that collect into crystal clear pools. With over 180 species of trees and bushes, hikers will find numerous routes to explore and discover dassies, porcupines, bushbuck and even frogs, snakes and butterflies.

Dlinza Forest Nature Reserve

From a wealth of hiking trails, to a 10 metre high skywalk, Dlinza is a 250 hectare forest home to around 70 species of butterflies, numerous picnic spots, and a popular birding route. The reserve offers the Royal Drive, that visitors can take through the reserve if they’d rather pop in and take a trip through area in the car.

With its warm summer months and cool but dry winter months, Ladysmith is surrounded by an abundance of nature. If you’re planning a trip to the area, or even looking to buy property, there is true South African beauty and nature that awaits.
