Sarel Cilliers bids farewell to dedicated educator after 38 years of service
Sarel Cilliers High School honoured veteran educator Andries Gregory as he retires after nearly four decades in the classroom.
Deputy principal Armand Slabbert paid heartfelt tribute to long-serving educator Andries Gregory, who is retiring after 38 years in the classroom — 27 of those at Sarel Cilliers High School.
Addressing learners and staff during a special assembly, Slabbert said it was an honour to recognise a man whose contribution “cannot be measured in years alone”.
“It is my privilege to introduce our colleague, Mr Gregory, who is retiring after 38 years of dedicated service,” Slabbert told the gathering.
“Throughout his time with us, Mr Gregory has been more than just a skilled professional — he has been a mentor, a team player, and a steady source of wisdom and encouragement.”
Slabbert described Gregory’s commitment, integrity and work ethic as qualities that made “a lasting and meaningful impact”.
“What stands out most about Mr Gregory is not only the work he accomplished, but the way he accomplished it — with patience, kindness and a genuine desire to help others succeed.”
A life shaped by service and family
Slabbert went on to paint a portrait of the man behind the profession.
Born in 1961 in Utrecht to parents who were both teachers, Gregory matriculated from Utrecht High School in 1979 before continuing his studies at the University of Pretoria and Pretoria Onderwyskollege from 1983 to 1986.
He married his wife, Marieta, in 1993, and together they raised three children — each one achieving head boy or head girl status at their respective schools.
Morgan is now a respected engineer and proud Sarel Cilliers alumnus; Franci-Mari teaches mathematics and physics at Piet Retief High School; and Susan is studying toward a B.Com at North-West University.
Slabbert noted these achievements “speak volumes about the upbringing they received”.
An educator’s journey across South Africa
Gregory’s teaching career spanned several schools across the country, including:

He taught Physical Sciences (Grade 10–12), Mathematics (Grade 8–10) and Natural Sciences (Grade 8–9).
In a reflection of his character, Gregory has requested to remain until the end of 2026 to complete the academic year with his classes, ensuring no disruption to their progress.
A legacy that endures
Slabbert closed his tribute with sincere gratitude:
“Thank you, Mr Gregory, for the impact you have had on Sarel Cilliers High School.”
Gregory leaves behind a legacy defined not only by his teaching, but by the countless learners shaped by his steady guidance, patience and passion for education.
