The Local Drug Action Committee, in partnership with the Department of Social Development, hosted a vibrant and inspiring Youth Day in Tumahole recently, in celebration of International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The event was held in collaboration with local primary and high schools, sponsors, and the office of the mayor of the Ngwathe Local Municipality, drawing enthusiastic participation from youth across the community.

A fun walk kicked off the day’s activities, setting an energetic tone and encouraging active participation. A local basketball team also added excitement to the programme, engaging with learners and promoting healthy recreational choices.

According to organisers, the aim of the event extended beyond mere celebration, it was a joint effort to use sport and other positive activities to build resilience among the youth. “By encouraging involvement in structured activities, we want to steer children and teenagers away from crime, violence, and drug use, and help them develop tools to cope with daily challenges,” the organisers said.

A total of 375 participants took part in the day’s programme, marking a successful turnout and reflecting the strong community interest in initiatives that support youth development.

The success of the event was made possible by the generosity of sponsors. The Edgar Legoale Foundation contributed six trophies, Elebone provided participation certificates for all attendees, and the Ngwathe Local Municipality sponsored gold and silver medals. The mayor’s office also ensured that all participants were taken care of with food, water, and cooldrinks.

The Youth Day event served as a powerful reminder of the importance of community collaboration in creating safer, healthier environments for young people.
