Illegal electricity connections threaten municipal infrastructure

The level of illegal connections is causing an overload on the electricity network, transformer damages and continuous power outages.

An urgent audit of meter boxes in the Mbeki Section was done the past week following a community meeting in Ward 6 to address the constant unplanned electricity supply outages in this neighbourhood.
Out of 42 houses that were audited, only 3 households are actively buying electricity legally while the rest of the households were found with bypassed and tempered meters.


According to the municipality the level of illegal connections is causing an overload on the electricity network, transformer damages and continuous power outages affecting loyal residents residents who are purchasing electricity.

Following the audit, the Ngwathe Local Municipality urged residents to buy electricity legally, and where applicable, qualifying residents should apply for indigent subsidy by visting the municipal offices with their ID document and proof of address.


Furthermore, residents who are consuming electricity illegally are advised to liaise with their respective Councillors and report tothe municipal offices in the technical department, the municipality said.
