Arrest after a woman threatens to spread Covid-19 in Sebokeng

It is understood that a Facebook user through a post on Facebook page ‘Vaal Notice Board’ threatened to spread Covid-19, saying that she would not die alone.

A concerned community member posted on the South African Police Services (SAPS) Facebook page asking for assistance regarding the matter.

“We need help regarding this woman, who is threatening our lives with Corona Virus. On her Facebook post this morning she informed Vaal community that she was diagnosed with the deadly Covid-19 and she’s spreading it and she won’t die alone. Kindly help us as we are afraid for our lives.”

After the post went viral, many called for the woman’s arrest.

Police Spokesperson Brigadier Vish Naidoo confirmed to Vaalweekblad that a 40-year-old man has been arrested.

“A charge of defamation of character under Covid-19 regulations has been opened against a Zone 6 Sebokeng man. This follows an incident where a woman claims that her Facebook page was hacked by her brother who then put a message about her being positive with Corona Virus.

“On investigation, police found out that the complainant’s brother living at the same address was the  person who posted the lies on his sister’s Facebook account. He was subsequently arrested.”

Naidoo says that a further investigation into the matter is currently underway. “Once is completed docket will be placed back for Senior Public Prosecutor’s decision.”

The suspect has been released on a warning by the court.
