Ward 16 residents to cast their vote this week

Voter turnout for the ward in the 2021 Municipal Elections was a commendable 62.09%.

A new ward councillor for the Ngwathe Local Municipality’s Ward 16 will be announced after this week’s by-election in Koppies.
Mmathabo Rasengane from the IEC confirmed that six candidates will be contesting in the municipal by-election on Wednesday.

They are Motshidisi Martha Motsoeneng (ANC), Caroline Thandiwe Mthinzi (PAC), Abram Mokwai Moletsani (EFF), Esau Sello Radebe (ACT), Valile Joseph Wessels (M.K) and Letshesa Joseph Manoto (Labour Party).

Rasengane on Monday said a total of 3 627 registered voters is anticipated to cast their votes at the Ipatleleng Primary School and Rebatla Thuto Secondary School.

The ward was previously represented by the ANC and became vacant due to the untimely demise of the sitting councillor and ANC Chief Whip, Cllr Leponesa Sochiva.

* An appointment is also awaited following the death of DA Councillor Arnold Schoonwinkel, in April this year.
In 2024 Ngwathe mouned the death of Cllrs Modise Moroenyane and Phillp van der Merwe who passed away due to illness, as well as a former councillor, Shirley Vermaak, who died in the age of 82 years in July 2024.
