Fledglings take to the skies as Parys enters a new birding season
This period is one of the best times for birders
Mid-summer in Parys brings a familiar scene as young birds begin to test their wings. Many of the migrating species that breed in South Africa now have fledglings learning to fly, and their calls and movements add life to the town.
At the home of Feathers Bird Club chairman, Martin Wolmarans, a pair of swallows has been hard at work. They usually raise two broods each year, but this season may be different. “They have already raised two clutches successfully,” he says.
“I believe they might raise a third. It will be the first time in many years.” He enjoys watching the story unfold. The young swallows first peek out of the nest with clear curiosity. When the moment arrives, they leave the nest with energy and confidence, joining the larger flock of swifts in the sky above Parys.
Migrating species settle across the area, from riverbanks to gardens, giving residents many chances to see them up close.
Feather Bird Club
Feathers Bird Club is a friendly place for anyone who enjoys nature. Members include high school learners, working adults, and retirees.
The club offers a calm and informal way to spend time outdoors, learn more about birds, and meet people with similar interests. The club will hold its first social gathering of the year on January 22 at 18:30 in the Social Hall at the Sally Martin Retirement Village.
Marisa Louw will present a talk on bird migration, explaining why it happens and how it works.

The club meets every last Thursday of the month at the same time and venue. These evenings create space to share sightings and stories. Members also take part in monthly excursions to look for birds, take photographs, and enjoy the outdoors. The outings are
relaxed and suitable for all fitness and mobility levels.
Anyone who enjoys birding is welcome to join the Club and contribute to the initiatives and activities they offer. Interested parties can contact Martin Wolmarans on 082 851 2121,
