Rocking the Vaal breaks Guinness World Record in landmark community event

Rocking the Vaal is a festival with two goals: to give hope to the Vaal community and to put the Vaal firmly on the map.

The Golden Triangle Chamber of Commerce (GTCOC), in partnership with Emerald Resort and Casino, successfully broke a Guinness World Record on Saturday, April 11 during the annual Rocking the Vaal festival.

The record attempt aimed to surpass the existing benchmark of 26,994 pancakes served in eight hours. Thanks to massive community participation, the Vaal region officially set a new record by baking and serving an outstanding 29,610 pancakes.

Collective effort

This remarkable achievement was made possible by the collective effort of 120 teams, each contributing to the large‑scale baking initiative. The record‑breaking attempt highlighted not only organisation and determination but also the exceptional spirit of cooperation within the Vaal community.

Meals donated

Originally, Rocking the Vaal planned a second world‑record attempt for the largest pot of Chilli con Carne. However, this attempt was postponed to 2027 following concerns raised during the pressure testing of the pot. Despite this decision, the organisers ensured that the initiative still delivered significant impact. The chilli con carne ingredients were portioned and distributed, resulting in 25,000 meals being donated to local charities.

Rotary Vanderbijlpark played a crucial role in coordinating the distribution of the food, reinforcing a partnership that has become pivotal to the success and social impact of Rocking the Vaal.

Unforgettable festival experience

Beyond the record-breaking efforts, Rocking the Vaal offered a full day of live entertainment, featuring an impressive line‑up of South African artists. Performers included Refentse, a local artist from Vereeniging, Adam Tas, Demi Lee Moore, Kurt Darren, Karlien van Jaarsveld, Droom Sindroom, and Heuwelsfantasties, ensuring an unforgettable festival experience for attendees.

“Rocking the Vaal is a festival with two goals: to give hope to the Vaal community and to put the Vaal firmly on the map,” said Jaco Verwey, organiser of Rocking the Vaal.

Gratitude

The organisers extend sincere gratitude to every community member who participated by baking, serving, and enjoying pancakes on the day. A heartfelt thank you is also extended to all partners, sponsors, volunteers, and organisers whose collective support ensured that Rocking the Vaal 2026 was an outstanding success.
