Solemn tribute for 11 victims of N1 bus tragedy
South African authorities were commended for the manner in which the accident was handled and for the care provided to survivors.
There was a sombre atmosphere at the Free State Government Mortuary in Bloemfontein on Thursday August 6, as families identified the remains of 11 Zimbabwean nationals who died in a devastating bus crash on the N1 near Trompsburg on July 30.
The bus carrying 79 Zimbabwean nationals, was travelling from Cape Town to Harare when it overturned on the N1 between Trompsburg and Edenburg.
The identification process, attended by grieving relatives, government officials, spiritual leaders and psychosocial support teams, highlighted what Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae described as the spirit of Ubuntu – compassion, solidarity and humanity in the face of tragedy.
A preliminary report presented to the families by the Provincial Acting Director of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Sidney Dywili, confirmed that 11 people lost their lives. Ten people were declared dead at the scene, while a 47-year-old woman later succumbed to her injuries in hospital.
A total of 65 patients were transported from the accident scene to Albert Nzula District Hospital, Pelonomi Hospital and Universitas Academic Hospital.
Dr Thulani Nkosi, Clinical Manager for Forensic Pathology Services, outlined the work undertaken to complete the required autopsies in a timely and dignified manner, paving the way for the SAPS-led repatriation process.
“This is an unfortunate circumstance – a time of tragic loss and sorrow. We bow our heads and share in your grief. We extend our heartfelt condolences and sympathy to all those who have lost their loved ones,” the premier said.
She praised the various state agencies and stakeholders involved in the emergency response which involved Free State EMS, public and private healthcare facilities, the South African Police Service (SAPS), traffic authorities and the Department of Social Development.

Zimbabwean Government representatives also expressed gratitude for the support provided to its citizens, particularly the efforts of emergency personnel and healthcare workers who worked under extremely difficult circumstances.

The Zimbabwean Government will facilitate the transportation of the survivors and the remains of those who died, back to Zimbabwe, where a memorial service will be held. .
