The story of a stillborn baby found deserted on Saturday in Kanana, Ikageng that has been trending since yesterday is false.
McMillian Dlutu yesterday posted a story of the stillborn baby found in Boikhutso Street, Kanana that was covered by the Potchefstroom Herald in October 2018. According to the comments, people have been under the impression that this incident occurred recently when in actual fact, it happened last year.
Dlutu confirms that the story he posted is from last year, found on the Herald’s webpage. He says that he posted it in order to inform community members about the “foreign objects” that are found in blocked manholes that the municipality officials have been attending to. “We have noticed that it has become a norm,” says Dlutu. He also mentions that there was a concealment of birth in Ikageng a few months ago.
The same post also appeared on the J.B. Marks Municipality’s Facebook page, however, Willie Maphosa, the municipal spokesperson says that he was unaware of this. Maphosa undertook to remove immediately, it has since been removed from the Facebook page.
Sergeant Kelebogile Trom, Ikageng Police spokesperson also confirms that the story is from October 2018. “So far, no cases of concealment of birth have been reported in this month(October 2019)”
