Operation Shanela: 1000 suspects arrested

Operation Shanela in the North West Province has made significant strides in its ongoing battle against crime, with 1,159 suspects arrested during operations conducted from Monday, 02 September to Sunday, 08 September 2024. This comprehensive initiative, involving police and various law enforcement agencies, has targeted a wide range of criminal activities across the province.
The suspects detained were implicated in numerous offenses, including rape, murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), malicious damage to property, and both residential and business burglary. The operation also tackled issues related to drug possession, theft from motor vehicles, and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Among those arrested, 208 individuals were wanted for serious contact crimes such as murder, attempted murder, rape, and house and business robbery. Additionally, 486 suspects were apprehended during targeted raids by detectives. The operation also led to the detention of 70 suspected undocumented individuals, who are now being processed.
The success of Operation Shanela was marked by a range of enforcement actions, including stop and search operations, roadblocks, and vehicle checkpoints. Law enforcement also conducted inspections of licensed liquor establishments and second-hand goods dealers. These actions resulted in the confiscation of various illegal substances and dangerous items, including drugs, weapons, ammunition, four cell phones, and two vehicles. Furthermore, 17 illegal liquor outlets, commonly known as shebeens, were shut down during the course of the operation.
Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, the Provincial Police Commissioner, praised the efforts of the police force, specialized units, and other stakeholders involved in the operation. He commended their dedication and teamwork in maintaining public safety and combating crime effectively in the province.
