Randburg Magistrate’s Court sentences man to 15 years imprisonment

BORDEAUX – The court had found the man guilty of robbery with aggravating circumstances and being in possession of stolen property.

A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by the Randburg Magistrates’ Court for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

It is alleged that on 1 June at about 7pm, officers executed their observation duties at the corners of Republic Road and Jan Smuts Avenue where robbery took place with the use of either a firearm or knife.

Captain Makgowanyana Maja of the Randburg Police Station said the officers noticed the suspect robbing the victim of her belongings.

“They immediately rushed to the scene and cornered the suspect,” he said.

The suspect was then arrested by Constables Norman Sekgobela and Madidimalo Motau, while fellow officers were on guard.

“The suspect was searched and found in the possession of the victim’s property and a toy gun,” said Maja. He also said the docket was registered and assigned to Detective Constable Helen Tshivhula.

The suspect was found guilty on two counts: one count, robbery with aggravating circumstances and sentenced to fifteen years imprisonment; and count two, being in possession of stolen property and sentenced to seven years imprisonment, which is suspended on condition that he is not convicted of other crimes. He was also further declared unfit to possess a firearm.

“The management of the station applauds the whole team’s effort and commitment to root out the criminals in society and hopes that the sentence will deter and send strong message to other would-be criminals,” concluded Maja.
