Stay safe in the comfort of your home

DOUGLASDALE – With the festive season fast approaching, the Douglasdale Police Station has some safety tips for community members.

The Douglasdale Police Station has drafted a few rules to keep safe in your homes in the build-up to this festive season:

  • Ensure that your gates are locked at all times and that the keys cannot be reached easily.
  • Security gates with sturdy locks in front of each outer door which are burglar proofed and have covered windows are recommended.
  • An alarm system connected to an armed response company can act as an effective deterrent.
  • Install security lights.
  • Ensure all entrance points to the house are secured when nobody is home.
  • Make sure all suspicious behaviour is reported to the police.
  • Have all your employees profiled as it may serve as an advantage in the future.
  • Casual employees without references should not be employed.
  • Good relationships with neighbours should be nurtured for the sake of mutual support.
  • Family/neighbours should be informed about your destination, the time you’ve anticipated you’ll return and the route you’ve chosen to get there, especially those based in a rural area.
  • Secure dangerous tools such as axes, spades, picks, ladders, etc which can be used in an attack.
  • While asleep in their respective bedrooms, no person should be visible.
  • Safe places such as bathrooms and toilets should be identified in the event of a home invasion.
  • Keys should never be hidden in traditional places such as under doormats or in pot plants.
  • Strangers should never be given access to keys or key numbers.
  • Locks should be replaced when keys are lost.
  • Barring devices should be inserted indoor locks.
  • Keys should be removed from doors when leaving the premises.
  • Proper key control measures should be implemented.
  • Strangers should never be allowed on your property without proper identification, especially at night.
