Art meets design at new gallery
BRYANSTON – Graham's Fine Art Gallery Bryanston opens doors in style and comfort.
Art and design enthusiasts can now enjoy the best of both worlds at one location.
Graham’s Fine Art Gallery Bryanston officially opened its doors on 31 July, and also launched its Cube Gallery and Vitra range (furniture from Swiss company Vitra).
The new gallery is said to blend art and design to optimally suit each other, as various contemporary art pieces and stylish furniture are strategically placed to establish the best creative experience possible.
“This is a bold and exciting initiative,” said Prof Federico Freschi, executive dean at the Faculty of Art Design and Architecture at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), at the launch.
“It raises the bar of contemporary art in the country.”
He said that he was very impressed at how art and design were brought together in the gallery, the Cube Gallery promotes “exclusive and beautiful things”, and although some objects in the gallery were “elitist”, they were also “optimistic and utopian”.
Owner of the gallery Graham Britz then unveiled a ‘living tower’.
Designed by Verner Panton in the ’60s for comfort, each of these furniture pieces can seat multiple people and offer infinite relaxing positions, as a costumed-covered woman demonstrated.
Britz invited the public to come to the gallery and rest in comfortable, stylish furniture while reading art books and enjoying espressos, wine and good contemporary art.
Art Historian Esmé Berman was also at the launch, and said many of the pieces were good.
