Hillman Imp team return from London

RANDPARK RIDGE - Adventurers Terrence Tracey and Geoff Biermann.

Imp drivers Terrence Tracey and Geoff Biermann returned safely from London without their trusty Hillman Imp.

A street party was organised for the duo who returned to Randburg on 19 May. A large crowd of Randpark Ridge residents waited for the duo to arrive while eating boerewors rolls and looking at collages of photos which were taken during the trip.

The team arrived in Randburg after 3pm with a replica Hillman Imp.

Tracey said, “We left the Imp behind with the Imp Club in England. The guys their will be looking after the Imp for the rest of the year and then the Imp will be shipped back to South Africa next year, or Biermann’s niece will be driving the car back to South Africa from Europe. We will decide what will happen closer to the end of the year.”

A distance of 14 000km was covered from 28 March and the team drove through Botswana, Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt and they took a ferry over to Europe.

Biermann said, “The trip would not have been possible without the help of all our friends and family. Believe it or not but the driving was the easy part of the trip, the mayor issue was borders and a visa problem we encountered.”

The team raised R7 000 altogether for charities like Save the Rhino International, Royal Institute of Blindness and the Johannesburg Society of the Blind.

“We will be handing the money over to these charities within the next couple of days.”

When asked if Tracey would ever take a trip like this again he smiled and said, “This was a once in a life time trip and now that we have completed it, I’m quite happy to stay at home.”

Biermann said, “The most amazing part of the trip for me was when we did not have enough money to cross the border from Sudan into Egypt. We only had 125 dollars and we needed 400 dollars to cross over the border.

I went to the embassy in Sudan and one of the officials gave me 300 dollars and said this is a gift from the people of Sudan. This was one of the most memorable moments of the trip for me.”

Tracey concluded, “After completing this trip we proved that the Hillman Imp is a very reliable vehicle.”
