Former Chier Justice Pius Langa dies

Pius Langa, the former Constitutional Chief Justice, die early 24 July
Judge Langa’s brother Mandla said, “Pius died at the Milpark Hospital. He had been in the hospital for a month due to a lung illness.”
The former Chief Justice was appointed to the bench by former president Nelson Mandela in 1994 and he took up the position of Deputy Chief Justice in 2001.
He held the position of Chief Justice from 2005 until he retired in October 2009. Judge Langa was also Chairman of the Press Freedom Commission that was inaugurated in 2011. The goal of the commission was to review the system of press regulation in South Africa. Judge Langa was awarded the Order of the Baobab in Gold for his exceptional service to human rights and law constitutional jurisprudence.
