School delivers five Proteas
RANDBURG - Fencing, Karate, Hurdles and long distance athletes represented Randburg abroad
Many pupils spend their holidays relaxing next to the pool or in front of the television.
However, five athletes of Hoerskool Randburg did something different and went overseas to represent their various sports disciplines at international level. Grade 12 pupil Kirsten Steyn, a fencing athlete, travelled to Croatia and qualified 4th during the competition. Steyn said, “I was placed as the number one athlete in the senior and U20 age groups after taking part in the competition abroad and the Senior African Championship that was held in Cape Town from 25 to 29 June.”
Selvio Cerone-Biagioni competed in a karate national championship in Russia during April and took third place in the individual and unison categories. He said, “I went to Greece in June for a international karate competition. Exploring such a beautiful country was a privilege.”
Larry Lombard, a 400m hurdles athlete, 800m athlete Jana van der Merwe and long distance athlete Carina Viljoen represented South Africa at an athletics meeting in Ukraine. Lombard said, “We took part in the competition a day after we landed in Ukraine and it had an impact on my performance as I placed 25th during the competition.” Viljoen placed 12th in the final round of the athletics meeting. Van Der Merwe said, “What I enjoyed most about the trip was the shopping in all of the markets around Ukraine.”
Hoerskool Randburg teacher Lizari van den Berg concluded, “We are all very proud of the pupils that took part in the competitions abroad.”
