Tortoise man slips and drowns
Police find homeless man floating in the river.
A 65-year-old tortoise man (a term affectionately coined by readers) died after he slipped and fell into a river at the Cherry Drive Park in Robindale.
Linden Police Station spokesperson Constable Ndivhuwo Mulamu said, “It is believed that the man was bathing in the river when he slipped and fell into the river, hitting his head upon impact”.
A friend of the deceased, Johannes Lebse, was looking for him in the early morning hours of 3 October. “I asked his girlfriend where he was and she told me he went down to the river to bath. I was shocked when I saw him floating in the river”, Lebse said. He added that he had a braai with the deceased next to the river the previous night and that’s the last time he saw his friend. The name of the deceased has not been released yet as the Linden police are still in the process of notifying the family.
“An inquest docket has been opened to determine what exactly caused the death. We will communicate with the public as soon as we have more information,” concluded Mulamu.
