Best teen actors compete

The ATKV school drama competition brought about the great young talent in the country.

The Afrikaanse Taal-en Kultuurvereniging (ATKV) in Ferndale selected the winner of its annual youth drama competition.

The project manager, Lizane Basson runs the annual project from Randburg, but pupils across the country participated. The winning play was Sneeuwitjie en die Sewe Zombies by Hoër Meisieskool Bloemhof, which walked away with the ATKV floating trophy and R25 000.

The script was written by director and award- winning playright Christiaan Olwagen, and André Gerber composed the music. Gerber and Olwagen directed the play together with Lani Celliers as assistant director. The play also won four more awards including best handling of technical aspects, best ensemble, best actress, which was awarded to Lisa-Jean Malan, and best director. The runner-up

was Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck which won a R15 000 cash prize for its production, Kragbox.

Hoërskool Jan van Riebeeck pupils Wilhelm Schumann and Jef van Cappellen won the award for best actors in the overall competition. Comedian, Francois Toerien’s play Vlieg in die salf written for Hoërskool Durbanville came third and won R5 000.
