Fete coming soon

The Ry-Ma-In Independent Living Community Centre for paraplegic and quadriplegic people in Linden is set to host a fete on 26 October.

The centre’s chairperson Elize Oelofse said the event will be held at the centre’s premises in 5th Street. “There will be many different stalls, with a beer and tea garden and white elephant tables. Many collectibles, books, clothes and plants will be on sale. There is a cake table and many people have donated their wedding dresses.” The items on sale are mostly donations and volunteers will help man the stalls.

Ry-Ma-In was established in 1977 and was the first house in South Africa to be used as an independent living community centre. “The house currently has eleven residents and it is at full capacity,” said Oelofse of the centre. “The residents are all disabled, but we want to give back to the community and with the help of our 17 staff members we are able to do so. We provide food to the needy in our area and we have a recycling depot on our premises.”

There is always a staff member on the premises in case of an emergency. Recently all the staff members underwent fire fighting and first aid training. The proceeds of the fete will go towards the centre.
