Tyre thieves target Linden

A new trend in tyre theft is becoming more and more common.

On 20 October the Linden police arrested a man on suspicion of stealing tyres from vehicles parked in the Linden neighbourhood.

Police station spokesperson Constable Ndivhuwo Mulamu said, “A security guard in the area saw the suspect rolling a tyre down the street. He thought it was very suspicious and quickly phoned the police. The police caught the thief and arrested him.”

Mulamu stated that there have been other cases of tyres being stolen in surrounding areas. “It seems that the tyres are mostly stolen from vehicles parked in the driveways. No further arrests have been made, however the police are patrolling and looking for anymore suspects.”

Linden Neighbourhood Watch chairperson Fareed Hoosen reported, “Stealing tyres is becoming a trend in many suburbs. These incidents happen in the early hours of the morning.

“It seems the thieves find a way to steal the tyres by lifting the gates or breaking through them to get to the vehicle. We have since increased our foot patrols and we are working with ADT Security and the police.”

There is yet to be confirmation as to which type of cars the thieves are targeting, in the meantime Mulamu advises the community to keep a lookout for any suspicious activities, and requests residents to work with the police in catching these criminals.
