A greener Cosmo City

Leaders, residents and school pupils come together to create a better neighbourhood.

On 12 October leaders and residents from various extensions in Cosmo City took to the streets to clean up the neighbourhood.

Local government and housing unity developer Edward Gqongo said, “Cosmo City has a lot of illegal dump sites, thus we wanted to take matters into our own hands to ensure our community looks good”.

Green Beings, a registered non-profit and public benefit organisation that educates youth about the state of our natural environment, took part in the clean up.

Green Beings manager Alex Frost said, “We were pleased to help the residents and donated 400 refuse bags. Even the small children and senior citizens helped and collectively the amount of rubbish picked up filled one large Pikitup truck”.

Green Beings has encouraged the residents to take charge and prevent littering and illegal dumping from occurring.

“The accumulation of rubbish lowers the value of the houses, provides the perfect breeding ground for rats and leads to large scale environmental degradation,” said Frost.

Frost hopes the annual campaign will grow from strength to strength and make a meaningful impact on Cosmo City.

“This year, a ton of rubbish was cleaned up by school pupils from all seven schools in the area. Over 1 000 trees were planted and nearly 8 000 pupils learned about the importance of a clean

community.”

Schools that took part included Cosmo Primary One, Cosmo City Junior Primary School, Cosmo City West Primary, Tirisano Mmogo Primary School, S’godipholo Secondary School, Blue Eagle Secondary School, and Cosmo Secondary School One.
