The leak is placing significant pressure on the local water network and disrupting daily life for residents.

JW teams have attended to a burst pipe, and excavation has been completed. However, they have confirmed that the service provider experienced technical challenges during the repairs on August 19.

Nombuso Shabalala, spokesperson of JW, explained that the planned repair method was to weld the steel pipe; however, the existing pipe was galvanised-coated, which made it difficult for the weld to hold.

“The service provider has therefore opted to join the pipe with mechanical couplings. The couplings are currently being sourced.”

Due to the interconnection in the water supply system, three major reservoirs have been isolated to minimise backflow into the excavated trench. Affected reservoirs include Olivedale, Boschkop and Honeydew.
