A different approach to soccer

Brazilian Soccer Schools aim to improve ball skills and close control.

The introduction of Brazilian Soccer Schools (BSS) in South Africa has addressed the urgent need to provide children with a dynamic coaching programme.

Coach of the Randburg BSS Mike Hughes said, “The sport was founded in the United Kingdom in 1996 by Simon Clifford, whose philosophy was to concentrate on improving ball skills and close control.

The programme introduced students to Futebol de Salao, the original version of five-a-side football that is played with a small ball with limited bounce.”

BSS Randburg hosts sessions for children between the age of five and 15 years and classes are catered for both beginners and the more advanced players and offer training sessions throughout the year.

“This way players participating in the BSS Randburg programme are kept in peak condition and constantly improving,” said Hughes

BSS Randburg played against BSS South in two matches on 26 October and BSS Randburg won both games. Hughes explained, “goals are scored after a team completes five consecutive passes. This is to encourage the children to control the ball, use their skills that they have learnt when it is appropriate to do so and then pass and move into space rather than ‘kick and charge’ in the hope of scoring.”
