Thief targets school cricket match

Three cellphones were stolen at a recent cricket match at Trinityhouse.

At a cricket match at Trinityhouse in Randpark Ridge last week, an unassuming individual robbed three people of their cellphones.

He blended in with the crowd so well nobody suspected his criminal activity, but a security camera revealed the culprit.

Trinityhouse principal Christo de Wit now wants to warn other schools. “This man seemed to be well experienced. It might not have been the first time he has done this.”

The theft occurred at a match against St. Benedicts and after the match three team members reported their cellphones were missing.

“Someone pointed out that we would possibly see what happened on the camera, and we did. We saw the man’s moves. He was in no hurry and he made sure he did not look suspicious,” de Wit recalled. The man was dressed in casual wear and could have passed as a coach or driver.

“He did not look suspicious, and he was even cheering the players on. He was on the premises for more than an hour. He got what he came for. We could not see any signs of any accomplices but it is possible. We just want to prevent this from happening at other schools.”

Camera footage clearly illustrates the individual removing a phone from a bag.

“If you have blinked for a second, you would think the phone belongs to him as he is playing with it as if it is his phone.” De Wit said it is very difficult to identify a criminal. “The cricket match started during the time parents come to collect their kids. So it must have been easy for him to get access because he probably said he is here for the cricket match. During other times of the day visitors are asked to park in front of the school’s front door. I hope no other school experience it, but at least they can now be on the lookout for this man, if he were to show up at another school.”
