Festive season is crime season

Shopping centres targeted during the festive season.

Christmas is fast approaching and with the festivities coming, so too does crime.

Criminals often target shopping malls over the festive season and shoppers are therefore urged to be cautious.

Bel Air shopping centre in Bellairs Park is owned by Tintswalo Property Group, and the group’s general manager Michelle Conradie said customer safety and satisfaction is always their first priority and visitors are ensured a good shopping experience.

“Park your car close to other cars and ensure that you do not have to walk alone when entering and exiting the centre, especially at night,” Conradie said.

Shoppers should ensure their bags are closed when walking through the centre and should never leave their bags unattended. “Do not carry large amounts of money when shopping, rather use a debit or credit card. Have your keys ready when walking to your car, and keep your keys with you when packing your groceries in the car. Lock any valuables left in the car in the boot and out of sight. Make sure that your children know where they can find you if they happen to wander off and get lost.”

Shoppers must make it as hard as possible for criminals to grab any personal possessions.

Linden Police Station Commander Colonel Mabalane Mohale said all police stations are working together with the security companies at malls and shopping centres to monitor crime and limit shoplifting as well as other criminal activities.
