Hairy faces at hospital

Doctors grow facial hair for Movember.

If you visit the Netcare Olivedale Hospital this November you will notice that some of the staff are more hairy than usual.

Radiologist Dr Mike Wilson, theatre recovery nurse Maynard Marillier, physiotherapist Juan Eekhout and the Emergency Department’s Dr Will Jelbert are among the staff who have been growing moustaches for Movember.

Movember is aimed at creating awareness about prostrate and testicular cancer. During November each year men grow a moustache for 30 days in which they change their appearance and the face of men’s health. During this time they become walking and talking billboards.

The Cancer Association of South Africa said South African men have a shorter life expectancy than South African women. One in seven men are diagnosed with cancer and one in eight women are at risk. Every year more than 4 000 cases of prostate cancer are diagnosed.
