Call for more registrations

IEC hopes dashed as Gauteng sees the lowest registration rate in the country.

The Gauteng Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) was hoping for a better registration result.

Statistics show Gauteng had the lowest registration rate of 69.2 percent. The IEC wants to increase the number of voters to 80 percent.

“The Gauteng department has a lot of work on their hands to increase the numbers,” said IEC Gauteng spokesperson Masego Sheburi.

“We are currently compiling research as to who was re-registering, how many new registrations there were, and of that how many were young people.”

There are more than 100 political parties contesting the 2014 elections. The public have been urged to use their right to vote. “People can still register to vote at their nearest municipal office, and to get more information about the elections, they can visit the IEC website or call the help line.”
