Saint Stithians College was one of the first schools to compete in the 30 Minute Heroes Challenge hosted by Coca-Cola.
The challenge consists of a five-drill circuit Grade 8 and 9 pupils had to complete within 30 minutes. The challenge is designed to test mental and physical fitness.
There were shuttle runs between six beacons, target throwing at a set of wickets, skipping rope, catching balls off a rebound board, and the final challenge was to weave in and out of 10 slalom poles.
The final scores will only be made public after all the other schools in Gauteng have completed their challenge. The prize for the top school is the installation of an outdoor gym valued at R200 000.
St Stithians director of sport Freddie Grobler said, “The boys had a lot of fun doing this, although the drills were slightly skewed to cricket, they were relevant to the boys who play any of the 13 sports we offer at the school. For example, in cricket the guys need to work on speed and agility; in rugby we need more power lifting and in hockey we work on hand-eye coordination. The five drills covered everything.”
Hockey coach at the school Dylan Coombes concluded, “The school has introduced a culture of exercise to encourage our students to keep fit, a lifetime practice – and an outdoor gym will offer functional fitness, in other words training the whole body as opposed to just one part.”
