Established in 2007, Douglasdale Police Victim Support (DVS) is a unit aimed at providing support to those who have experienced traumatic experiences.
It is comprised of five well-trained counsellors who deal with persons who have experienced rape, domestic violence, attempted murder, hijacking and armed robbery.
”The trauma counsellors provide basic emotional support to anyone who has been a victim of crime by helping them learn how deal with the effects and nature of their trauma,” said head counsellor Carol Badenhorst.
Badenhorst believes timely intervention in the form of trauma counselling can make a huge difference in coming to terms with harrowing experiences and helps victims to establish coping mechanisms.
Trauma counsellors are available 24-hours a day and assist in securing further care for victims in need of therapy outside the police station’s short-term trauma programme.
