Astroturf on the horizon
Within less than one year Trinityhouse pupils will play hockey on a different surface, and it will be a first for any private school in the area.
Trinityhouse High School in Randpark Ridge announced its decision to build a new water-based hockey astroturf, a first for a private school in the area.
The project is set to start in January and will be completed in May.
“The idea behind the creation of this new field is not just to give Trinityhouse field hockey a state-of-the-art facility that will appeal to their abilities
and skills, but also to increase the aesthetic look of the school’s entire sporting landscape,” the school’s principal Christo de Wit said. “…An R8-million hockey turf is an asset to the school as well as a benefit to all hockey players.”
A water-based astroturf surface is universally regarded as the preferred standard for field hockey performances at local and international level, and is a favourite among coaches and players for its durability and low maintenance.
“The addition of this new turf will demonstrate commitment to the sports programmes and student-athletes,” he said.
The installation will cover a full-size field (100m x 60m), floodlighting for night games, a technical area and includes sufficient space to seat large groups of spectators.
“Our school has so far produced many players who represented our school and country at various levels and therefore we look forward to the next phase of Trinityhouse hockey,” said De Wit.
