Defunct street lights add to crime
Residents say the dark streets create more opportunities for criminals.
The corner of Republic Road and Queens Avenue in Windsor East is in complete darkness due to lack of service delivery by City Power.
”This area has no street lights working. We reported this to City Power several times and we are constantly told that this matter will be attended to, but it never is,” claimed resident Fausta Catita.
Catita alleges that Windsor East is an area with a large number of drug users and dealers and there is a lot of other criminal activity. According to Catita, not having street lights has contributed to increased crime activities in the area.
”Three to four street lights need fixing in order for the community to feel safe again. Many residents have barbed-wire and security systems to protect themselves from the criminals and violence. I do not understand why no one has bothered to repair the lights,” added Catita.
Ward 98 councillor Laurette van Zijl and City Power spokesperson Sol Masolo are yet to respond to the matter.
