After losing a finger

She lost her finger but she is taking it day by day.

Daphne Dando (78) who lost her finger when two robbers entered her cottage in Diamond Street, Sundowner said life goes on.

”I do not know how to feel,” she said. “I have nothing to compare it with. I just don’t want crime to be swept under the carpet anymore. It is not under control.”

As reported in the article, Finger bitten off, week ending 17 January, one of the robbers bit her finger off in order to get her rings. The crime happened within seconds.

The robbers gained access when they climbed onto the municipality box on the pavement next to the fence. The bottom wire of the electrical fence is neutral and they stretched it to gain access to the property.

Since the attack barbed-wire and sharp objects on the municipal box has been installed to prevent another incident.

”They must have been watching me because they knew exactly what they were coming for.”

Dando’s daughter Janine said they had no incidents for the past 18 years. ”The street is now patrolled regularly,” she said. “I do believe the awareness has increased. I cannot wrap my mind around how someone could break in and bite someone’s finger off.”

Dando is receiving counselling and visits a specialist twice a week. She said, ”I am told I look fine. I just hope another case like this can be avoided.”
