Indian dance with a twist

The Jazzy Masala Dance Academy invites those interested in the art of dance.

Versha Magan, a qualified dancer, choreographer and director of Jazzy Masala Dance Academy has opened her doors to the Randburg community.

The Jazzy Masala Dance Academy which was established in 2008 is expanding its wings to create awareness of the performing arts industry and its many offerings.

The academy offers classes at the Walter Sisulu Hall on Thursdays at 5.30pm. ”The primary goal of the academy is to teach dance to a diverse cross-cultural group from children to adults, male and female, whether beginners or experienced, ultimately to play a part in helping to develop a community that has a greater sense of confidence and self-esteem,” said Magan.

It also makes available opportunities for professional dancers, artists, choreographers and dance teachers to showcase their talent on professional platforms simultaneously aiming to continuously upgrade the standard of Indian dance in this country.

“For many years Indian dance was primarily local to the community of Lenasia. The mission of the academy is to extend this to other areas to embrace all communities by providing an amalgamation of different dance styles, both cultural and contemporary.”

With this mission in mind, the academy commenced providing dance classes in Randburg, Murlbarton and Mayfair, starting initially with 45 students.

The academy is one that is ever progressive and sets its sights on teaching a mixture of dance forms with a strong base in the North Indian classical dance form of Kathak. While Kathak is the building block, numerous other forms such as ballet, jazz, hip-hop, Bollywood and contemporary styles are introduced at various levels.

“The practice of Yoga is also done in order to assist in developing the body, mind and soul. This provides variation to turn out versatile contemporary dancers in an industry that is demanding and always looking for something different.”
