In the foyer of the Saxon
Sculptor shares his greatest works with hotel visitors and potential buyers.
Ferndale sculptor Koos Botha (79) currently has two of his pieces being displayed at the Saxon Hotel in Sandhurst.
He said, “It is quite something for me to have such an opportunity in my 80th year and especially at such a prestigious hotel.” Botha is one of 23 artists whose work is on display at the hotel.
Botha’s yard is full of objects he has made from wood. At the age of four he started to make little wooden animals. Pointing to a table he said, “This took me 15 years to complete. I make a lot of benches, tables, little chairs, bedsteads and wine shelves. Years ago 10 of my pieces were exhibited at Zuid-Afrika Huis.” Botha also carved the front door of his house in the late 60s.
During the week he lives alone in his house, since his wife Gertie has been living in Pretoria on weekdays to take care of their grandchildren for the past four years.
“I don’t think anybody’s yard looks like mine,” he said. “I still take on projects, so all my tools and different objects are all over the yard.”
His career spreads over decades and is not going to stop now.
