One dance step at a time

A dance movement is on the rise, and Shelton Forbes is at the forefront of it all.

Randburg resident Shelton Forbes has already taken the entertainment industry by storm – and he’s only 22.

“When I was in high school, I danced for the fun of it. Things only started getting serious when I got asked to dance for legendary artists such as Tuks. It was then that I realised I could make money from the art,” said Forbes.

The hip-hop dancer and choreographer dedicated most of his time to gaining experience within the business world before starting his own entertainment company. He was featured in several music videos as a dancer and was also a back-up dancer for numerous local and international artists on stage.

“I also got the opportunity to travel across the world touring with these artists. Travelling opened my mind to endless possibilities, and also created a chance for me to learn from other dancers. All this inspired me to start my own entertainment company.”

The Movement is Forbes’ new project. It consists of four dancers, including himself and a DJ. “The Movement is not a dance crew, we are an entertainment team. We own the performance on stage and entertain the crowd. We compile a mix of different songs that we can perform on stage all on our own.”

His aim for the company is to create a platform for dancers not to be in the background but to be in the forefront of the dance and entertainment industry. “Instead of us dancing for others we dance to our own music, and tell a story through our own dance style.”

Dancing is Forbes’ first love, and through The Movement he hopes to break new ground for dance. When he is not working hard to be the best dancer, he is perfecting his other talents which are acting, singing, and television presenting.

In the future Forbes hopes to be a master in all his crafts but right now he wants to take it one dance step at a time. “I feel the need to keep going, I never want to limit myself. I feel inspired by my dancers, and artists such as Neo and Chris Brown, to keep pushing.”
