Room named after culinary icon
He has achieved many things and now his name is written on the door of a training room in Randburg.
A training room at the HTA School of Culinary Art in Randburg was named after honary life president of the South African Chefs Association, Manfred Muellers.
Meullers’ family, friends and colleagues were present. The ceremony was presided over by HTA founder and current South African Chefs Association president Stephen Billingham. The training room is filled with memorabilia of some of the highlights of Muellers’s culinary career, generously on loan to the school to help inspire the next generation of chefs.
Muellers has spent a lifetime in kitchens and classrooms. Born in Germany, he has worked in top establishments and worked with some of the best chefs in South Africa throughout his long and illustrious career. Since 1977, he has passed on his knowledge to chefs and hoteliers as senior lecturer at the School of Tourism and Hospitality at the University of Johannesburg.
He was recently awarded honorary membership of the World Association of Chefs Societies and Grand Officier Maître Rôtisseur Honoraire du Bailliage d’Afrique du Sud by the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs. He retired from the University of Johannesburg in December last year after 36 years with the institution.
It was moving for him to see the display of memorabilia related to his career. “It is nice to see everything together, all the milestones and achievements,” he said. “I look back and realise how much I have put in to something I enjoyed. It never felt like work, it was always a pleasure. To share your knowledge and inspiration is a great honour.”
