Freedom from addiction

New community project aims to help people recover from any addiction.

A new community project is on the block to help people recover from addictions.

The Freedom Recovery Ministries is a Christian-based community project that aims to help people recover from all kinds of addictions and dysfunctional behaviour.

Drug, alcohol, pornography and gambling dependencies are the most common addictions the project helps people recover from. It also helps with dysfunctional behaviour such as bulimia and love addiction – being addicted to loving someone obsessively to the point that it is unhealthy, such as staying in an abusive relationship.

There are weekly group meetings at the Robin Hills Scout Hall and individual coaching.

At the project’s second group meeting, one person suffering from bad relationships, depression and self worth, and who did not wished to be named said the course was helping her recovery.

She explained, “I did not think I would get anything out of this but it is life changing. What is happening out there is sad but through God there is grace and hope.”

According to Sandra Kelly, who is the project’s founder and one of its three recovery coaches, the project uses unique methods. “Unlike traditional coaching therapy, which follows set steps for everyone, we help people discover problems for themselves,” said Kelly.

“Then we help people make decisions that will help them. We look at how to make the next right choice.”

Noah David, who is a manager of a rehabilitation centre in Lenasia also attended the project’s second meeting. He said recovering addicts needed to be seen as people with positive futures and that they needed “spiritual support, love and care”.

The project is not aligned to any specific church or denomination.
