Country’s best needs sponsors

RANDBURG – SA's water polo players must fund themselves.

South Africa’s men’s and women’s water polo teams have been told they must self-fund their tour to the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships this year.

Each player must raise R23 500 to participate in the tournament which will take place in Aberdeen, Scotland, between 5 and 12 April.

Swimming South Africa originally gave the players an estimate amount, but only told them the actual amount on 14 March.

With little time left, the players are anxious and desperate to raise funds.

Despite this, the women’s water polo captain, Bromhof resident Kelsey White was confident that the team would do well at the championships.

“I believe we can win a medal if not the championship,” she said.

“Italy and Australia are better than us but they are not participating. The teams that are participating are on our level.”

White’s team-mate Claire Gorrie lives in Randpark Ridge and trains at Rand Park High School.

“I personally cannot afford the trip,” she said. “But I am in a fortunate position in that my parents have put away money for me so I should be able to go.”

She also believes the team would do well.

“I think we can win a medal. Our coaches have told us we are the strongest team they have had, and if we win a medal we can go to the next Olympics.”
