Powered up DJ

North Riding resident Mohau Losaba, better known as DJ Franky is a relaxed and down to earth person.

He is known to many as the popular house DJ at Power FM.

“My passion for music and radio began in 1999 when I started listening to YFM,” he said. “I would visit the radio station and job shadow a few of the DJs there. But I officially started being a club DJ when I was in high school. My peers and I would practise at each other’s houses and would then DJ at parties.”

DJ Franky’s first presenting job was Rhythm 100. “The online radio station allowed me to use the experience I gained while job shadowing and interning at YFM. It enabled me to grow as a radio presenter.”

Before moving to Power FM, he worked at 5FM. “I was a house music DJ. I would do house mixes for the Roger Goode Show as a Friday night mix DJ on 5FM. I wanted to establish myself as a club DJ and 5FM gave me a chance to do that.”

DJ Franky Tonight is his first self-produced album. “This is my first official album, all the tracks on the album were produced by me. I have worked on other albums before but that was in collaboration with other DJs.”

Soul Candi Sessions 4, Electro Candi 2 and SA House Charts are some of the albums that he has collaborated on.

Although DJ Franky enjoys being a host of his own show on Power Lounge, he takes pleasure in performing his music to large crowds. “When I am in the studio I am alone, I do not really get to see the a reaction from the audience. When I am DJing at a club I love the immediate reaction I get. I love pleasing the crowd.”

There are a lot of potential DJs that DJ Frank believes are on their way to making it big in the industry, and he advises anyone who is trying to get into the industry to work hard and remember to be themselves. “Break out of the ordinary and do not be a copy of the other. There are enough people who are doing the same thing. Dare to be different and unique.”
