Super Cup Hockey success
RANDBURG - Deloitte Super Cup hockey tournament preps players for season kick-off.
The Deloitte Super Cup hockey tournament, hosted by the Southern Gauteng Hockey Association, took place on 14 and 15 March at the Randburg Hockey Stadium.
According to Josie Milella, event co-ordinator at the Southern Gauteng Hockey Association, the tournament was a great way to get the players reader for the hockey season, which begins in the first week of April.
Six male teams and six female teams from various hockey clubs across Gauteng took part in the tournament. These included Wanderers, University of Johannesburg, Old Eds, Crusaders, Jeppe, University of Witwatersrand, Jeppe Saint Andrews, and Pirates.
“The tournament has allowed us to test our newly-developed game strategies. We have new members in our club and this has given them the opportunity to show the team what they are capable of before the season begins,” said Wanderers women’s team coach Ricky West.
Witwatersrand first ladies team captain, Kristen Marley-Jepson stated, “This is the first year that such a tournament has taken place. This was good for the team as it has established great team building before we [play] any other matches.”
The University of Johannesburg women’s team and Wanderers men’s team were the winners of the tournament and walked away with R10 000 each.
“Congratulations to both teams. A big thanks to Deliotte for sponsoring this great event and the Southern Gauteng Hockey Association for hosting the event,” Milella said.
