Rags to riches and radiotherapy

NORTH RIDING - Letshego Modutwane is a jack of all trades doing her best to master it all.

North Riding resident Letshego Modutwane (24) is working towards a bigger career.

Modutwane is currently a radiation therapist at the Constantia Netcare Clinic. “I was always a clever pupil and interested in science and mathematics. My family encouraged me to study medicine, and I thought radiation therapy would be an interesting field to pursue,” said Modutwane.

It was only after her father passed away that Modutwane decided to major in oncology radiotherapy. “My father died of cancer. I thought it was destiny that I was in the medical field and could pursue a career in something that could help my family,” added Modutwane.

Modutwane explained her life story as one from rags to riches. “I grew up in a township in Bloemfontein. We lived in a shack. I was not fortunate enough to go to a school in the city but I made the best of what I had, and worked very hard. I worked my way up thanks to my studies and have bought my mother a house, and later bought myself a car. My education has helped me improve my life.”

Her upbringing inspired her to write her first book entitled The Perfect e.g. “I wrote the book because I wanted young people who may come from a similar background to know that there is hope. Through reading my book they can be inspired to follow their dreams and never give up.”

She also published a daily planner, which is a diary that will not only help a person plan their day but on every Monday they can get facts about cancer.

There are a few other projects Modutwane has been working towards launching, which includes the Cancer Cancelled campaign that she established.

“More than anything I would like to continue motivating others. I will have a book tour later this year.”
