Cito rocks the Queen of the ballet show

RANDPARK RIDGE - Star moves to Randburg, performs at Queen at the Ballet.

Cito (39) moved to Randpark Ridge in March and already, he is rocking Joburg audiences.

The lead vocalist for WONDERboom and Jesus Christ Superstar Fame moved back to his childhood neighbourhood and is currently performing in the Queen at the Ballet show, at the Joburg Theatre till 13 April.

The show choreographed by Sean Bovim and produced by Bovim Ballet and The CoLab Network, tells the story of Queen’s lead singer Freddie Mercury through rock-ballet.

It features about 20 Queen hits, including ‘Who wants to live forever’, ‘Another one bites the dust’ and ‘Barcelona’.

Cito’s involvement in ballet was limited before the show but now he has learnt to appreciate its intricacies.

“I never had much experience of ballet, having seen one or two performances,” Cito said.

“When I was called to do this I received a new perspective. They work really hard and what they do is beautiful.”

Cito has been co-managing The CoLab Network since last year, which organises entertainment events and sometimes he performs in these events.

He said singing Queen’s music is a challenge, but he likened himself to Freddie Mercury.

“Freddie’s music is quite high and not many people can do it,” he explained.

“It is quite challenging but I’ve always been keen on trying different things with my voice. I don’t know Freddie’s life story too well but he had a special quality of singing, and the most supernatural range and he sung with no reservation, which is how I like to perform.”

Cito also claimed Mercury was a “party animal” and related to this because he too knew how to balance taking care of one’s voice with enjoying life.

“Me and my wife [Linda Otto] go to clubs and dance. It is an important part of a balanced life.”

Cito’s favourite Queen song is ‘You take my breath away’, which he calls “passionate”, “beautiful” and a “real love song”.

Queen at the Ballet show was performed in two sold out seasons in Cape Town in 2012.

Cito, Daniel Fisher and Angela Kilian sing in the show and Michael Hankinson leads the orchestra.
